I saw Coraline last night! It was spooky and dream-like and totally beautiful. I know a lot of people are probably going to pick it apart and dissect all the reasons why it should not be successful according to the tried and true story formulas and paradigms that audiences are used to seeing, but I really loved it. It is totally unconventional and it really stays with you...I went to bed last night thinking about it and I woke up this morning STILL thinking about it. I think it's got what me and Sean call "That Wes Anderson Thing": there are movies that are created for instant satisfaction, to deliver their messages in as clear and straight forward a manner possible, and then there are movies that don't put everything on the table all at once, approach film making from a unique vantage point and overall challenge an audience to think and explore and come to their own conclusions, and I think Coraline is one of them. (Obviously, Mr. Anderson isn't the only filmmaker who makes movies of that nature, it's just a good contemporary example. I had to see The Royal Tenenbaums a couple times before I liked it at all.) When I left the theater last night I was kinda "Well it was good, BUT..." while secretly my inner 7-year old was jumping for joy, and at present I'm thinking that I really would like to see it again.
Also, did you know that there are Coraline shoes?? I know the Laika/Nike connection is totally obvious to all you folk in the animation spectrum, but it's still pretty cool that they made them. I guess they are impossible to get ahold of. You have to win them or something.
Also you have to wear socks made out of cotton candy with them.

Ah! I want to see that movie so bad. I was quite close to going to see it tonight. I can't wait to see it now.
we saw it last night too and we all loved it (my five year old too)! it was beautifully done...
I definetly agree. I went to the coraline panel today at nucleus, and those guys made the movie that much more interesting.Havent been this exited for a movie in a while.
Sounds like such a great movie!!!!
Now all I want to do is see it!!! ^__^
I wish my shoes came with cotton candy!
I just saw the movie in 3d today! I was transported into a beautiful world for part of my day. i almost cried for joy as she walked through the magical garden. I also loved the two old actresses. They're poster artwork in their apartment reminded me of your work. I thought to myself.. did brigette work on this movie??
I've got my pair of coraline shoes. they are cute but i would be too scared to wear them.
jonathan: I wish I had worked on it! I woulda been way out of my league though.
Ed: Scared because you don't want to mess them up or scared because you think they'd look stupid?
Hey ! I am glad you dug it Brigette. Honestly I was waiting for your thoughts on the film. I have to talk with you guys about it. It's like an independent film for kids.
Oh and , the crew got those Coraline Nike dunks. I just got mine in the mail last week. You can't touch!
I hope you guys are doin awsome !
I thought it was lovely, and Ed, do you really have those shoes?? I'd wear them.
I saw it, too, so amazing and painstaking to put that together, really quite something.
Hi! Just stumbled across your blog, and am loving your art. And yes, I agree with you on "Coraline." It is a brilliant movie and awesome debut for Laika, and it makes me angry that it's not getting the attention it deserves because of its uniqueness, and un-Disney/Pixar-ish, non-formulaic execution. There needs to be more films like this!
